Health care and gays

I was reading John Teehan's recent blog entry where he talks about RNC chairman Michael Steele suggesting that allowing gay marriages would increase health care costs to employers.

As I wrote in the comments section of that blog entry, the goal of everyone, even Republicans, seems to be to cover more people. The Republicans want to do more of it through employer plans. It would seem that this would fall right into their plan.

It's far cheaper to purchase health care coverage through an employer's group plan than it is to purchase it individually. In some cases, it's downright impossible to purchase such coverage. The idea is that when an insurer covers a large group of diverse individuals, the risk is diluted and the costs per person are quite a lot less.

Let's see. More people covered. Lower costs to cover those people. Seems to be a winner.
