Niagara-On-The-Lake

We love quaint little towns with diverse shops lined up along the streets, cute restaurants, maybe a pub here or there, flowers and attractive landscaping, plenty of benches to rest on while my wife browses. Niagara-On-The-Lake fit the bill.

We had no plans to go there. We were going to go do the African Lion Safari near Toronto. But while driving along the picturesque road along the Niagara River, we suddenly started seeing - Wineries!

We can't seem to slip by a winery without stopping. And we did stop, at one called the Ice House Winery. The region is well known for their ice wines, I believe, and our sampling of the wines at this one let us see why. The stuff was simply heavenly! Of course we had to purchase a bottle. It's chilled in our fridge, ready for consumption.

The guy at the winery suggested the Whirlpool Jet Boats as a fun thing to do. So we went to check them out. Turns out you pretty much have to reserve your spot days in advance. And they said you would get totally soaked. Well, it wasn't THAT warm, and we didn't want to get soaked since we had our stuff more or less packed for the flight home the next day. So we weren't all that disappointed that we didn't get to do it.

Instead we happened upon the downtown district. It's a beautiful little strip of stores. Reminded us of other towns like Saugatauk Michigan and Holland Michigan, and even Long Grove Illinois, places where they've developed their downtowns into tourist attractions.

We found a good restaurant to have lunch at. We also found candy stores, a wine store, and plenty of galleries and specialty shops to browse. Parking wasn't terribly expensive, and it made for a nice afternoon.

Then it was off to Toronto, to a Comfort Inn Hotel near the airport. Not the nicest area, but not terrible. And fairly convenient to the airport. Which, by the way, is one of the nicest airports we've been through recently. Unfortunately, their sign placement to tell you how to actually get to the airport terminals left a bit to be desired. We ended up returning our rental car to the wrong terminal, and had to trek through the airport to find the tram to take us to the right terminal. But it worked out all right; we got home in good time, and everything ended well!
