I'm by no means an expert in this field, just someone with my own perspective, and access to a few other perspectives from people in the business. My own credentials are probably less than impressive. As a practicing dentist for 23 years now, I've been involved in organized dentistry on the local level for a lot of that time, including running Childrens' Dental Health Month programming for a few years and serving on both the Direct Reimbursement committee and on the Access to Care committee. I've also been involved with (in the past, not so much currently) our local "free" health care clinic, the Will Grundy Medical/Dental Clinic, as a volunteer dentist. (Currently I'm just a donor.) The issues for dentistry are different from those of medicine. We don't have nearly as much insurance intrusion. But we also don't deal with life threatening emergencies and illnesses, and we don't contend with ultra high liability premiums. Nonetheless, my opinions are formed out of (what I consider to be) common sense and a familiarity with some of the issues, and from working in a model that, while using similar reimbursement ideas, seems to control costs better than the medical model.
