Alas, the entire season fits on only on four disks because Fox canceled the show far too prematurely. As both a Western and science fiction fan, I completely bought into the way the two mixed on Firefly. I can believe that an all-knowing, all-seeing government would dump people on new worlds, then let them have a go at doing what they will. It underscored a pioneering spirit, and left lots of room for a little old-fashioned gun-slinging heroes. Well, I did warn you I'm a Western fan. I'm definitely a sucker for heroes, and Zoe rocked. Even more delightful were the characters. Even from the first episode, the show looked comfortable. The actors grokked their roles, and they played off of each other very well. The characters were fun, funny, complex and full of interesting layers. Every one of them had a skeleton in their closet -- well, except for Kaylee -- but I still rooted for them. I even rooted for Jayne, despite his near-betrayals. Finally, I enjoyed the stories. They were solid, full of wit and humor, and touching. "Out of Gas" remains my favorite hour of television. This isn't to say that every Firefly episode was a winner. "Heart of Gold" was a bit cliché. "The Message" felt contrived -- I didn't really see why Mal didn't let his buddy in on the plan. But overall, I quite enjoyed its brief run. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
