RadCon Report

How about a quick recap of RadCon weekend?

This was the second year where RadCon had a writing or literary track. It's primarily gaming and costume. It's BIG as far as gaming is concerned. The writing track is small but I like it for that. We got to hang out in the small press room and that was the place to be. Talebones, Scorpius Digitial, and Wheatland.

In my YA panel, the panel itself outnumbered the audiance. But what did I learn? That you can talk to a fellow writer even as a rat is crawling around her shoulders. The rat was cute, actually. I used to have a gerbil (when I was a kid) that used to sit on my shoulder. Okay, but what did I learn writing-wise? I guess common widom is whatever age the audiance you're aiming for (in young adult), you make your protagonist two years older.

On a unrelated note, I heard other programming participants say the gamers and such where surprised to find out Sci-Fi had a literary side.

My reading didn't go so well. Mike Moscoe took up my reading time. My fault, really. I should have told him to shut up. He was nice about it and so was I. Nobody new had come in for my reading. The reading order (half-hour each) went like this: Ximena, Mike, and me, Rob Vagle. Ximena's reading went great! She read two stories and got a great response. Mike was comfortable with her reading into his time.

It's quite a long drive to Pasco, but I do like the drive along the gorge. We'll probably go again next year, but it might be nice to start out earlier in the day on Friday.
