2004-06-24 8:37 PM Blustery With Care Mood: Lucky In Love Read/Post Comments (2) |
A thoroughly blustery day today, but a care package awaiting my return!
I'm currently watching the England vs. Portugal semi-final EuroCup soccer match, where they're just gone into overtime. The rest of the city is watching in various pubs around town, except for the two places with signs out front declaring them to be football-free zones :-) After work, which was just washing run-of-the mill CBM (ceramic building material), bones, pottery, and metal fragments, I went over to the theatre and watched the newest Harry Potter movie, which I recommend. I haven't read this one's book, but did enjoy the flick for a fiver. The Evil Eye cafe was not closed early this time, so a bit of Internetting, then home for a dinner of Peking Spare Rib & Five Spice crisps (i.e., potato chips) and Slow Roasted Lamb and Mint crisps and some bread and Yorkshire bleu cheese, plus a can of cider. In addition to the regular work today, we had a tour of the conservation labs, where they take good care of things found on excavations, both ours and those conducted elsewhere in the country. They have a wet wood lab, where they soak ancient water-logged timbers (and leather) in various solutions, so that a waxy substance known as polyethylene glycol (PEG) can replace the water in the cells to preserve the size and shape of the original wooden artifact. Without this process, the wood dries out and shrinks and warps, going down to maybe 50% the original and distorting in many cases. Hmmm. Tournament soccer balls are silver with three black lines, one circumscribing it in each plane. Interesting - no more plain white with hexagon patterns. Ah, the game has just moved into its second overtime. If the score remains tied after 15 more minutes, the teams will have a penalty kick shoot-out. Right near the end of regular time, England put the ball into the net for the winning point, but the ref apparently disallowed the goal, and the commentators don't know why. The one theatre here in town has three whole screens. Burbank has three theatres, with something like 25 screens between them. Quite a difference, no? Oooh, Portugal just scored! That's not good... the question is, will the riots be bigger if England wins, or loses? ;-) . . . Portugal just missed a shot, that was a close thing. Hmmm. The announcers are making this game exciting. I'll be back when it's over. ;-) Heh. England just scored. Now 2 to 2. The pubs must be noisy now! . . . Okay, finally over about 10:30, with the match decided by penalty kicks, two extra on each side, with ultimate victory going to Portugal. The goalkeeper scored the winning kick. Sometimes it's good to have the indoor jobs rather than having to spend all day outside slogging dirt around in the mud, rain, and cold wind. :-) What flavors will they think of next?
