TheOwnersManual Dobe Doinat's Owner's Manual 51521 Curiosities served |
2005-10-07 6:52 AM A Koan Of Light Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (0) This Owner's Manual (which should come with every complex mechanism) will eventually consist of some "Rules for Life" (specifically for Dobe, although they may apply to others in certain or general circumstances), to find my way through this life.
Of course, there are "Rules Of Conduct" which are expected behaviors derived through time-honored codes of conduct, customs, decorum, diplomatic codes, etiquette, formalities, guidelines, manners, protocols, social codes, social procedures, and standard procedures. Then again, "To Rule" is to call the shots, to be in charge, to be in control, to be in the driver's seat, to be in the saddle, to call the tune, to lay down the law, to make the decisions, to make the rules, and to run the show. "To disobey" or disregard a rule is to balk, to be remiss, to contravene and break the rules, to counteract, dare, decline, defy, desert, differ, disagree, evade, flout, ignore, infringe, and to misbehave. It is to neglect or not conform, to not heed or not listen, to not mind, to object, to overstep clear bounds, to rebel, to resist or to revolt. A revolution, an insurrection or a mutiny is to run riot, to set aside, to shirk or strike, to transgress, to violate the rules. Traditionally, to abide by, to comply, to conform, to go along with, to obey or to highly regard a rule might require proper etiquette, manners, amenities, civility, codes, conventions, courtesies, customs, decency, decorum, deportment, dignity, form and formalities, good behavior, mores, politeness, proper behavior, propriety, protocol, rules, seemliness, social graces, suavities, and proper usage. "House Rules" apply to a place or group using routines, rules and regulations, or standing orders but military rules or the rules of war are called military operations, the art of war, the military arts of strategy and tactics. To "Toe The Line" is to adhere to or obey the rules, to heel, conform, fall in or fall in line, to follow the book, to stay in line, to toe the mark. I don't intend on creating inflexible rules, however. To me the rules I'm looking for would not look out of place in a Zen Koan. My rules may be paradoxical, unusual, or contradictory. They may be fun. What they will NOT be is inflexible. I'm asking for your help in writing these rules. You might find one when or where you least expect it. Write it down, save it and submit it through this site, PLEASE? Thank you. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
