Bertha Hinman's Curse

My next-door neighbor, Bertha Hinman *, is an amazing character to this day.

She was born and raised and graduated from high school in Snohomish, 1917.

Recently she shared some of her writings as a Poet in the 1940's and 1950's here in Western Washington.

Sometime around 1950, Bertha took a Poetry Class from Theodore Roethke at the UW in Seattle. Roethke apparently gave an assignment to write a curse.

Here is Bertha Hinman's Curse and I love it!
Go! You scuttling cockroach!
Go hug Charybdis.
Get to your succuba and glut
Your fluke-infested crapulence
On peachpits and ratchel!
* Note: Coincidentally, Bertha Hinman, my Mother, and Theodore Roethke were all born in 1908.
