Ron left a handwritten note on his desk saying he'd be back in bit. Later, when the office was repainted, someone replaced the Ron's note with a typed note. When the building got phones a few years later, someone sent the company switchboard a memo informing that Ron was out. The phones were upgraded over the years and eventually an automated message was created so everyone would know Ron was out. Ron got an email address just like everyone else when the company embraced computers.

Monday morning Ron sat down at his desk and prepared to go through his inbox.
