Political uniformity’s cost Subject: April 8 article, “The growing cost of political uniformity.” I was surprised to not see any mention of how the polarization process was helped along by the “Reagan Revolution” spearheaded by Lee Atwater and Roger Ailes. It seems to me that much of the “winner takes all /win at any cost” mentality which afflicts us began then. BRENDAN BOERNER Austin
On Thursday I received a postcard with no return address or signature:
Ronald Reagan invented win-at-any-cost politics? Reagan had a meaner mouth than Harry Truman or Ted Kennedy or Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton or any of the other liberal demogogues who have called Republicans Nazis? Reagan more ruthless than LBJ, whose TV spots depicted Goldwater blowing up a little girl with an A-bomb? Worse than the liars who smeared Bork and Thomas? How about Rosie O’Donnell who in campaigning for Hillary called Rudy Giuliani “the village idiot” or Richard Gephardt calling Republicans “trickle-down terrorists,” (whatever that was supposed to mean)? What about Bill Clinton, who described his own tactics as “whatever it takes”? Mister, you’re divorced from reality, unless, of course, you’re merely an unprincipled con artist.
