C2's fractured vertebrae

I learned Tuesday afternoon from C that my daughter has two fractures in one of her bottom vertebrae due to an accident several weeks ago in gym. I’m not clear exactly what happened but it had something to do with C2 opening up too soon when she did a move using the vault table.

She apparently was complaining a couple of weeks ago of some pain, saw a chiropractor she’s seen before, felt better but then began feeling worse this past weekend. She was X-Rayed Monday afternoon at which point the fractures where discovered. The Doctor (Orthopedic or Chiro?) who they saw said it’s apparently a common problem for gymnasts and that other girls could have the same problems but not be experiencing any pain.

The treatment plan is for C2 to discontinue gym for at least 8 weeks at which point she’ll be re-X-Rayed to determine if the bone is knitting back together. She has to wear something similar to a corset (my brothers who may remember Dad’s surgeries back in the 80s will know what I’m talking about) which prevents her from bending her back. She’ll won’t be involved in any sports or PE at school and will use a rolling backpack.

She also can’t roughhouse e.g. in the pool, wrestle with T, etc.

I saw the Children last night and other than being bummed about having to drop out of gym this Fall and having to wear the corset she seemed fine.
