As I'm walking through my life I've found it useful to distinguish between 'Big I' and 'little i'.
little i is the ego. It's the part of me that thinks it know what will make me happy and really doesn't like it when things don't turn out like it thinks they should.
Big I is something else. Sometimes I think of it as my Soul, Higher Self or Higher Intelligence. In general it's not too concerned with what little i thinks it needs or wants to be happy and perhaps with good reason - little i has been wrong many times.
little i is useful though - it's the part that makes sure I get up in the morning, practice bio-maintenance, drive to work, work and play well with my colleagues (most of the time :-) ) and generally manage the day to day mechanics of life on the Earth-plane.
Big I is the one with knowledge of my Life Script and orchestrates events within that bigger picture. When someone comes into my life, or exits it, that's Big I at work and little i's 'job' is to realize that and go with it - to surrender to the process.
