Plain Banter
. . . lies about science fiction, and everything else.

When the writer becomes the center of his attention, he becomes a nudnik. And a nudnik who believes he's profound is even worse than just a plain nudnik. -- Isaac Bashevis Singer

Olympic Moments, part 3

Two from women's beach volleyball. First, why do they wear swimsuits for this sport? OK, so the sport started as a beach-side activity, but at this level, they play in stadiums, with the sand trucked in. It's not like they're going to take a swim after the game.

Second, the pair from Norway. (I don't think of Norway as a place where folks hang out at the beach a lot, but that's another story.) What catches my eye is that both of the Norwegian women are wearing white patches on the back of their shoulders. Birth-control patches, my daughter and wife identify. Why on earth would these women, knowing they're going to be on television, for an audience of a billion, place their patches in such a visible spot, instead of under their suits? Could this be en endorsement?
