Plain Banter . . . lies about science fiction, and everything else. When the writer becomes the center of his attention, he becomes a nudnik. And a nudnik who believes he's profound is even worse than just a plain nudnik. -- Isaac Bashevis Singer |

2004-08-15 8:11 PM Olympic Moments, part 5 Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe, in a preliminary heat. Like a lot of the competion, the Thorpedo wears a full-body speed suit and cap -- only his face, hands, and feet are uncovered, to reduce drag. But he's got heavy five-o'clock shadow, so I suppose a little drag is OK. In the heat, his per-minute stoke count is noticeably lower than the other swimmers, and he makes much less splash with his kick. It looks like he's not working nearly as hard as the others, except that he wins the heat easily. [Later, in the final, he is clean shaven.]
