Plain Banter . . . lies about science fiction, and everything else. When the writer becomes the center of his attention, he becomes a nudnik. And a nudnik who believes he's profound is even worse than just a plain nudnik. -- Isaac Bashevis Singer |

2004-08-17 8:19 PM Olympic Moments, part 9 Badminton. It's easy to see why this sport has not become a big TV spectator sport in America. I can barely track the birdie (shuttlecock?) when they hit it. Part of the problem is the camera angle. Instead of showing the players from the side of the court (as they do in table tennis), the camera is behind the players at one end (as in tennis). When the birdie is hit straight at the camera, or straight away, the TV viewer cannot really see it move very well. And the points are often over too quickly to make it interesting to an unenlightened specatator such as I.
