Plain Banter . . . lies about science fiction, and everything else. When the writer becomes the center of his attention, he becomes a nudnik. And a nudnik who believes he's profound is even worse than just a plain nudnik. -- Isaac Bashevis Singer |

2005-02-11 2:22 PM Friday night gripes I tend to do most of my SF writing on Friday nights, as I don't have to get up early the next day and can type away all night if I'm rolling. Life often conspires to sabotage my regular writing schedule, though.
During football season, I have to attend most of the games at my oldest daughter's high school. It's not that I'm a big football fan, but she's the drum major in the marching band and I'm the webmaster for the band's website. (You can see it here if you're really curious.) Besides lending support for the band in the Band Boosters seats, I have to take photos for the website. That daughter will be graduated this year, but I probably have another four years of band duty: my youngest daughter will be a freshman next season and is considering marching band. Normally, this time of the year my Friday nights are free and I can work 8-10 hours on a good night. A block of time that long is hard to come by any other time of the week. But it isn't going to happen tonight. One of the scholarships my college-bound daughter is applying to requires a completed tax return for 2004, and the deadline for applying is this Tuesday. Bastards; it's probably some sort of test to weed out the folks who aren't ambitious enough to jump through their hoops. Normally, I'd have another two months to get the taxes done, but now I have to rush. And I'm already knee deep in a video editing project for the band that threatens to take away a lot of free time over the next few weeks. Oh, and did I say I'm sick? And I think I'll have to spend some time online for my day job tonight to check on a computer problem we're having today. It's a good thing I quit that critique group a couple of weeks ago -- it doesn't look like I'm going to get much writing done this month. Sometimes that's just the way it goes.
