I wish to record the deaths of ten people in early April. Without limiting the impact of the last of the ten, please notice the order of my reporting.

Nine of the dead were members of the Australian Defence Force who died at around 0930UTC (7.30pm AEST) 2 April 2005, when a Royal Australian Navy Sea King helicopter crashed on the island of Nias during the humanitarian assistance operation for the 2005 Sumatran eaethquake.

Overshadowing these deaths, and others around the world on these days, was the death of Pope John Paul II.
