We have a guy that works for us, whom cannot seem to understand just what a break is for. Time after time, we have had run-ins over this very situation with him, and I finally snapped. I have had discussions with him, and we are ready to send him packing. In today's workplace, you must be able to provide documentation of wrongdoing to terminate employment. I am simply covering my ass for that happy day to come. On Friday, this is what happened: I send said employee on a 10-minute break, prior to our lunch hour. We have them punch in and out for all breaks, even if it is a paid break, so there is always documentation that we have given breaks out. He punched out at 11:36. It was nearly noon when I was looking all over for him, and came up empty. Kayla then tells me that she saw him punch in, at least 10 minutes ago. He then pops up from the lobby area, and assumes his position working a front counter register. I tell him to punch in again. He refuses, saying he has already done that. I tell him I would like another punch, so I can see what time it is now, that he has actually returned to work. He still refuses, so I find his number listed with his name on the schedule. I then go to a computer, and punch him in myself. After lunch, I was able to get to the computer in the office. His punches were at 11:36, 11:47 (not that I like 11-minute breaks, but that is not the point here) and the one I did for him at 12:00. I then deleted his 11:47, making the one break 24 minutes long and therefore unpaid. I wrote him up, explaining that he needs to use the restroom during his break. I brought him into the office with me, and went over it with him. He was pretty upset, saying he did not have to go until after his break, and he has no control of his bodily functions, that he needs to use the restroom when he needs to, not just on his breaks. HUH?? I said to him, "I don't get paid to take a shit, and neither do you" He says he doesn't understand why others get to use the restroom, and he doesn't. HUH?? At this point, I am so upset, and confused, I just tell him, "There is the form. I don't care if you like it, agree with it, or anything. You do however, need to sign it. Write your opinion of the matter onto it, and then, clock out. I am done with you for the day." "But I am not off until 3:00." "I am done with you. Clock out." I need a break myself now...CALGON, TAKE ME AWAY! |
