A "G-Rated Journal" That Even My Mother Can Read (because she does!)

Effervescence is a state of mind. It's about choosing to bring sunshine to the day.
Every person I meet matters.

If it's written down, I know it (If it's not written down, I don't know it)
If it's color-coded, I understand it (If it's not color-coded, I don't understand it)

Got the Job!!!

Got the Job!!! - Here's the exciting news first!!! I have a job that starts on Monday!

Okay, punchline delivered. Now, on to the narrative:

The Interview and My Morning
* 05:09 - I've actually kind of missed being up while it's still dark
* 05:45 - On the road, beating the traffic
* 06:24 - At this time of day, the commute is easy and fast, just 40 min or less
* 07:45 - 1st kinko's not there, 2nd no working printer's, 3rd not open, 4th I'm in line for the only computer, grr
* 09:01 - I think that interview went well, might know today
* 10:01 - Not a bad drive back to work, either

I was up and moving around, even already showered and dressed at 5 am on Tuesday morning, remembering that I've had some jobs where I got much peace and tranquility from those early dark hours before. It's been a while since I've been required to get up that early, but after naturally waking up in a tent at 6 am for 4 days, it was easy to be up at 5 am for the interview.

I left the house and was actually on the freeway before 6 am, and there was really no traffic. Of course, that put me in town 2 hours before the interview, but I thought I would just find a local Kinko's, make a few extra copies of my updated resume, and then hang out for a bit. It took *all* 120 minutes to find a Kinko's and get my printouts! The first address I pulled up on my phone wasn't there. No sign of a Kinko's anywhere. The second one I found quickly enough, but all three printers in the computer center were down. The employee who walked in right that moment, arriving to work with no working printers, knew absolutely nothing about what to do. She just kept looking panicked at her co-worker, asking frantically "What do I do? What do I do?" I left. There was no chance she was going to have working network printers before my interview, which was still 90 minutes off.

The third site was harder to find, because now I was into that part of Pasadena where parking is more scarce. And once I'd parked and walked to the front door, then I noticed it was a Shipping center only, and not open for another hour. So I went hunting for a fourth location, getting further and further from my interview, and using more and more of my free time. Found the store, it was open, there was only one computer station, and a customer already working on it. I wanted to scream. But the nice lady was done quickly, I logged in, printed my copies, got back in my car, back to JPL, parked, and to the front lobby exactly on time. *whew*

The job is with a kind of "Dev Support" group. These are the engineers and programmers who act as Tech Support for all the JPL engineers. They keep the programs running that the other engineers use to do their work. They want to specialize in having one-stop documentation access, too, and desperately need someone to fill that role. Enter me. I was able to tie in experience with almost every single job I've ever had, and in fact he was really excited to know I've done Tech Support myself before, so I understand picking up a phone and working with a customer. He seemed impressed to hear I really don't get flustered easily, can roll with the punches, and can be flexible.

All in all, the interview took only 30 minutes and I was back on the road, heading for work. Although the 110 which drives into the heart of downtown-downtown LA always has traffic, still it was a fairly easy drive from Pasadena straight to the LAX area. I'm feeling less worried about the commute, because I'm *still* really familiar with all these freeways and traffic patterns. I can get myself anywhere, and around pretty much anything.

There's also a major train system next to my (new) work, and possibly up from my home neighborhood. So I'm planning to look into possible commuter trains and other ways to relax and have someone else get me to work while I don't have to drive. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Tue Afternoon and Evening
* 14:59 - finished creating/updating sampler of technical writing online for job interviewers (thanks cavalaxis! thanks Mom!)
* 15:50 - tentative verbal job offer! woot!
* 23:49 - very productive apprentice dinner night, good food, good people, silliness ensued -- and there are office supplies! whee!

My interviewer wanted a sample of my Technical Writing, so I spent my "lunch hour" getting that polished an online. Lynn and my Mom both had great comments and input on both the website and the samples themselves, so I'm very grateful to you both. And looking at my one-liner messages on twitter, just an hour later I got the phone call from my recruiter that they wanted to offer me the job! Now, the recruiter cautioned not to open the champagne yet, because nothing was in writing, but he'd proposed a salary number and was waiting to hear back from them.

Dinner was over at Jon Thomme's house, where Medb Renata and Tonwen met up with me, Jon Thomme, and Eva. Conchobhar (Rick) was unable to join us, but we had a wonderful dinner and a very productive work session. We also discovered yet more reasons that the six of us are a wonderful (if sometimes unholy) alliance of similarities and silliness, and we all squeal over some of the same things. Tonwen got a little silly shopping for office supplies, but I couldn't be more tickled pink. *squee*

Today So Far
* 10:15 - lots of work, very heads-down busy
* 15:15 - IT IS OFFICIAL! I start my new job at JPL on Monday! at a 12.5% raise!

I started off in my office really hunkering down and working. My three training projects still have two files in draft format, and although I knew the 3rd was supposed to be wrapped up with all the latest information, I had no idea why the 2nd wasn't done yet. So it was just a normal work morning until I was about to head out for my follow-up appointment at my eye doctor's. (I got new contacts recently.)

Just as I was locking my computer to leave for the eye dr's, I got the final call from my recruiter. It was official! The job offer is in writing! And they didn't even counter the salary request, they said, "Sure." So I have an appointment to be at the recruiter's office tomorrow at 8:30 am (in Pasadena, of course), and then I start at JPL on Monday morning. No days off. No unpaid days of unemployment. My contract ends Friday, my new job starts Monday.

I cannot tell you how bouncy happy I am right now.
