I posted a few weeks back on one of my favorite newsgroups, William Sander's ng over at sff.net. I wanted to know for a novel I'm working on what tree would provide the best wood in a virgin north american forest for bows and quarterstaves if I assumed that an alternate world north america had produced a medieval level of technology. I got some seriously good answers, and almost consensus that it would be hickory.

However, as always, it soon degenerated into delightful puns about flora. amazing how many tree names can be substituted for common words and by the end of two weeks I was completely "over-elmed" by it all A lot of "up your ash" and "twigged out over this" and "it's all balsam to me" I loved it as some of the best wits in the business competed for the biggest tree/flora related puns they could come up with.

It's definitely my favorite newsgroup.
