2004-10-10 11:09 PM Editorial: The nature of Infamy In the 18th century, the author, Voltaire, signed all of his letters, "Crush the Infamy."
He had been forced to take refuge in Switzerland because of his denouncements of the French King and the Catholic Church for their persecutions of the protestant sects. Infamy and infamous mean Evil Fame. They designate something that is famous for being evil, malignant, and vile. So when a certain individual says his story is "infamous" he is quite right. The story is evil, malignant, and vile. It is something that only a corrupt mind could write. when people say that he is infamous, or he admits to being so, they are all very correct. He is evil, malignant, and vile. No one, especially an author, should strive to be infamous. Good, clean fame is far preferable. It is better to be known for finely crafted work, kindness and compassion, than for the darkness of your soul and the vileness of your spleen. Think about it. Infamy and fame are not the same thing at all.
