Too obtuse to use?

My esteemed mentor made a posting this last week concerning bombast. I'm not here to label the following as such, but it does bring up a slightly different angle. I exchanged an occasional letter with the brother of the person who had an influence on her getting into "U.U." in the 1970's and he was describing, in one, a classical or, as we specific music fans would call it, "legit" concert. He wrote about a "brummagem" audience member who clapped and cheered loudly at pauses not between movements.

Well, it's there in the dictionary and the "-gem" part makes for a mnemonic device. It means "cheap and showy", an inexpensive fake jewel making a handy reference.

But where and when can use such a unique word? I suppose it's a great reason we intellectuals stick together.
