Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Full moon fever

I recently read an article that I told Teresa about—about how we actually are more productive after a rest/vacation than we are if we don’t take any time off. (This has been a problem for her in the past.) I wonder if I’m not having a “physician, heal thyself” moment here. Because I work at home—and in this I’m also including SCA “work” (GWW Publicity and various A&S projects primarily, right now) and everyday life work (bills and whatnot)—it’s hard for me to close the office door and walk away. Heck, it wasn’t always easy for me to do that when I worked Sage, where towards the end overtime became a necessity. Even on “weekends” (which are hard to define around here) I’m checking e-mail, working on projects, etc.

After Saturday early afternoon, I didn’t sit down at the computer except to (a) look up random stuff like Cat’s actor cousin, and who plays a character in “Charmed” and a character in “Nip/Tuck” (to confirm that they’re different actors), etc.; and (b) skim e-mail to make sure there was nothing crucial, either from family and friends, or regarding GWW or taxes or anything weird. Even after everyone left, that’s all I did, because Ken and I wanted an evening together, and specifically not one that involved both of us sitting next to each other staring at separate monitors.

So now I feel really good today. Energized. Ready to tackle projects and be productive. Huzzah! I want to finish the Amenities Booklet (i.e., clean up about four or five typos that Maren, Cat, and I found between ourselves. I need to finish copy editing and prep for indexing. The dishwasher’s running, but we need to throw in several loads of laundry. The cat boxes are becoming scary. I’d love to go to Fry’s and fondle keyboards for my Palm.

Another thing I did Saturday afternoon was set up a new submitted-stories tracking system, thanks to the lovely folks on the OCW list who gave me ideas and advice. It’s in Excel, so I can even see how long a story has been out, and cutting-and-pasting will be easier. Sheet 1 is a list of all the stories out, what genre each is, what magazine each is out at, when it was sent, how long it’s been out, and any notes (e.g., if something that’s being held for a second read). Sheet 2 will be the full list, including stories that have returned, so I can see how many submissions I made. Sheet 3 will be stories sold. After that, the sheets will be for individual stories. That part of the project will take some time, so I’m going to do it as each story comes back.

Cat brought me a tea towel that says “Stop me before I volunteer AGAIN”! I just about died. She needs one, too, of course. ;-) I’m going to take this with me to Baronial Council meetings, I swear.

Okay, back to the present. I’ve copy edited and started indexing. I’ve answered tons of e-mails. The Amenities Booklet is printing. We’ve done four loads of laundry (darks, lights, beach towels, and bedding), cleaned cat boxes, vacuumed, made dinner (burritos and nachos by Ken , and Caesar salad by me). Helped folks sew.

Now, however, it’s after 1 a.m. and I’m stomping around the house being grumpy and out of sorts. I want to do _something_; I just can’t figure out _what_. Something productive, but with a medium-level brain requirement.

Okay. We’re going to watch “Angel”. It won’t be productive, but it’ll at least capture my attention and shut me up. :-)

Oh, I get it! Full Moon! That explains everything!
