She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Spin, span, spun

We slept in today, blissfully. Umberto went off to do yet another bank run, and I stayed in the RV and typed in receipts into Quicken for him so we knew how much money the War had taken in.

Then I tried to go on the Period Encampments Tour with Caterine and Emrys (Caterine had already been on it), but it was a misprint that it was being run on a second day. We did sit and talk with the leader of the Roman encampment, though, and see a bit of Lyondemere’s period encampment.

I said earlier that one of my War goals was to buy a drop spindle. I mentioned this during the Saturday early a.m. Gate shift, and someone I highly respect as a person and a spinner immediately said, “Do _not_ go shopping for one without me or [another spinning expert]!” It startled and pleased me, because she’s someone whom I don’t know very well and can be hard to get to know. Well, I ran into her Sunday afternoon after the not-tour, and asked if it would be a good time to go shopping. “Oh!” she said. “I already found one for you.” And so she took me off to Merchant’s Row to a merchant I’d hoped to buy the spindle from, and handed me the one she felt was the best balanced, and thus I acquired a spindle. (I didn’t buy wool, because I figured I’d get some alpaca from Berengere and Kuang Ch’i, not realising until later that I’d need to clean and card the fleece. But more on this later.)

Umberto returned. Muirenn and I both had massages and shared some ice cream. Umberto bought a book on hat making and I bought some incense from the merchant who’d taught the spinning class (partly because I wanted more incense, partly because it was $3 for 50, and partly because I didn’t need to buy a lucet or loom from him but wanted to buy something). I got Amber (my favourite of all of the ones I sniffed), Patchouli Rose, English Rose (big surprise on the rose theme, eh?), Egyptian Sandalwood, and Leathers. The latter really does smell like leather! Kinda weird concept, but yummy all the same.

We had a final GWW staff meeting, which was kind of bittersweet for me. It ended at about 8 p.m., and I was torn. I wanted to wander more, see people I hadn’t had the chance to see. But I was exhausted, and we needed to unpack the RV at home. So we unhooked everything, brought in my banner and stand, and drove away into the darkness, away from the flickering campfires and star-filled sky.

Once home, we ordered pizza, unpacked the RV, and sorted junk mail from real mail. Then we curled up and watched the second ep of this season’s “Angel”, which was funny and full of Spikey goodness, and left us wondering what was going to happen next.

And then we slept.
