Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

But what does it really mean?

Words Written: “Busted” edited; “On Display” mailed; “A Father’s Blessing” mailed

It’s been officially announced, so I can finally announce it here: I’ve sold a story to Strange New Worlds 8!

(And everybody reading this except Phaedra is thinking, “What’s that? I mean, it sounds important, and it’s obviously a good thing, so I know I should say ‘Yay!’ and ‘You go, girl!’, but what does it really mean? Why do I care?”)

(Sorry. Been reading too many pamie.com archives recently.)

SNW is a contest and resulting anthology for Star Trek stories. Pro rates, etc. A possible foot in the door for other writing projects.

This is the second story I’ve sold directly because of the Work-for-Hire Workshop. What’s also cool is I know other folks in the antho: Annie Reed, Dan Duval, and David DeLee. We rock!

I hear we’ll be comped if we attend Shore Leave, the annual Trek convention in Baltimore this July. Very tempting. Now that would be a fun reading! We’re trying to figure out if we can combine this with a trip to visit my family and/or to visit various friends all up and down the East Coast.

Hey, just figured out how to make lists on Amazon.com—made one of all the books I have stories in. So if anyone’s looking for one…I don’t necessarily recommend Amazon over Powells or any other bookstore; it was just a convenient place to make a list.*

Fun with html and the Internet. Who would’ve thought?

Got a rejection from F&SF today, somewhat balanced by also receiving the payment for Best Lesbian Erotica 2005. Story in question is ready to be mailed back out tomorrow, along with “On Display” and “Busted”.

Hm. Just did the math. If I add 20K to AETW (which is the minimum, I think), I should shoot for 1.5K/day. That allows for a few days off (Twelfth Night, a bike ride, and two Styx concerts that will no doubt consume entire days on their own) and three days of editing (which I’ll need) before we go to Death Valley for a long weekend at the end of January. I’m assuming I need to mail it to workshoppers on or about 1 February. Hm. Should be doable, and gives me a fair amount of leeway.

I’ll need the leeway, anyway, to work on another story with Teresa and hit a couple of other anthology deadlines. Eep. This should be…fun.

*My list seems to have disappeared. Phooh. Will re-try after the New Year. Be happy to send the basic info to anyone who has some holiday money to burn and wants to start on their Ultimate and Complete Dayle Collection now.
