Fence = Wall?

So Bush signed a plan to build a big-ass fence between parts of the US and Mexico. Mexican leaders are apparently upset.

"It is an embarrassment for the United States. It is proof, perhaps, that the United States does not see immigration as a subject that corresponds to both countries," [Mexican President Vicente] Fox said.

I don't even know what that means. And he's not distinguishing between someone who legally applies for citizenship and someone who runs through the desert to get there.

"The decision made by Congress and the U.S. government is deplorable," Calderon said while on tour in Canada. "Humanity committed a grave error by constructing the Berlin wall and I am sure that today the United States is committing a grave error in constructing a wall along our northern border."

I'm sure we're gonna hear a lot of comparisons with the Berlin Wall in the coming months and years, but it's dumb. It shouldn't need to be said, but I'll point out the obvious. The purpose of the Berlin Wall was the keep people in East Berlin. The purpose of this fence is to keep people out. There's a slight difference between imprisoning people and forcibly keeping people from entering terrority that belongs to you.

But really, why would the Mexican officials be so upset? Could be because of this last bit from the story:

Last year, Mexican migrants sent home more than $20 billion (euro16 billion) in remittances, the country's second leading source of foreign income after oil.

Aha! Now we're getting somewhere. Illegal Mexican immigrants in America are the second largest source of foreign income. Holy shit. No wonder the Mexican government doesn't want to stop it.

Enough said.
