Mr. Rogers

I have had a photograph of Mr. Rogers on my cubicle wall for years, and I have enjoyed telling people that Mr. Rogers was a hero of mine and watching the skeptical looks I got back. Was I kidding? Was I sincere? Was I mildly retarded?

The fact is that Mr. Rogers was a decent man who asked the right kinds of questions, presented the right guests and segments, to help kids get a grasp of both the world outside and their own inner lives. Watching Mr. Rogers truly can help a child cope with his or her emotions, and the Rogers aproach was a good example for parents as well. Mr. Rogers taught respect for the mind of the child, respect for everyone's vulnerablity.

The world will be a lesser place without this man and his cardigans.
