All the commentators have pointed out that the population of the US seems to be living inside a big budget Sci-Fi film. Totally divorced from reality, the American public has accepted a matrix of lies as reality and nobody seems to care about any glitches in the system.
In the UK things are a bit different:

As leftwing Labour MPs circled the prime minister, Mr Blair put on a brave face. Speaking during his flight to Kuwait, where he arrived last night ahead of today's visit to Iraq, the prime minister insisted that weapons of mass destruction would be found.
