What’s new for home viewing? Let’s find out….

1. “Lord OF The Rings: Return Of The King” I hear the extras on this set aren’t that great, but you can’t diminish the superb “Best Picture” of last year and it should shimmer on your home theatre. Of particular interest is the great performance Sean Astin gives here.

2. “Welcome to Mooseport” one of the worst comedies in years stars Gene Hackman as an ex President who moves to a small town and runs for mayor against Ray Romano, who proves that those experts who say the line between film and TV is gone are full of crap. Romano sucks on the big screen and this film is full of crap.

3. “Wizards” animator Ralph Bakshi’s story of elves and Tolkien characters is out on DVD for the first time. I was never a big fan of the rotoscoping style of Bakshi’s cartoons. But if it works now the way it did in 1977, lite up a doobie and enjoy.

4. “Around The World In Eighty Days” Producer Mike Todd’s mammoth 1956 Best Picture is finally out in wide screen and now the colors and effects should glisten. David Niven, Shirley Maclaine, Cantinflas, and a host of stars make this magical family adventure a must see.

5. “300 Spartans” from 1962 was a favorite matinee actioner back then. A mindless gladiator story with lots and lots of fights stars a buff Richard Egan and not so buff Sir Ralph Richardson.

6. “The Great Escape” One of the greatest war movies ever stars Steve McQueen and James Garner and is now out in a two disc special edition. Don’t miss this John Sturges classic.

7. “Bubba Ho- Tep” a favorite art house midnight movie last year stars Ossie Davis and Bruce Campbell and has something to do with political conspiracies and an over the hill Elvis and an African American who thinks he’s John F. Kennedy. It’s classified as a horror comedy.

8. “The Testament of Dr. Mabuse” is Fritz Lang’s masterpiece from 1933 and is out from Criterion. Mabuse is a madman criminal mastermind that will not and cannot be contained in a mental institution, or can he? See it just for the camera angles.

9. “Northern Exposure Complete First Season”. The first season of the celebrated CBS series set in Alaska is here to enjoy again.

10. “The Tin Drum” the anti war, anti Nazi 1979 Oscar winner is here from the Günter Grass novel. This is a long and disturbing work of a young German boy who stands still and plays his drum as the world rages out of control. Compelling imagery.

Now lets see how we did on STML on Friday…

We picked 4 out of 5 of the top 5. We got “Shrek 2”, “Troy”, “Van Helsing”, and “Mean Girls” but slotted “Man On Fire” in the number 6 spot with “Breaking All The Rules” at 5. It twas the other way around.

Oh well, ST still IS though!
