Here, from our New York World News Headquarters in New York, is Connie Chung. CC: Good afternoon and welcome to “One on One”, I’m Connie Chung. Recently, ads placed by a group calling itself “Swift Boat Veterans For Truth” have been stirring a controversy. The ads claim John Kerry’s war record is false and he lied about his service in Viet Nam. The ads claim Kerry’s Purple Hearts were given to him for self inflicted wounds. Also the groups ties to the Bush Administration have given some Democrats the idea that the Republicans have supported and financed the mud slinging campaign. Here to discuss this with me today is Bush Campaign chief, Karl Rove. KR: Hi Connie, nice to be with you. CC: Karl Rove, the financier of this campaign is a Texas billionaire who has close ties to you. How can you say that this campaign is not tied to the Bush re election team? KR: Like this, Connie. These ads are not tied to the Bush re-election campaign. I don’t have control over my friends, he wants to place ads on TV he doesn’t check with me first. It’s his God given right to run ads. CC: Mister Rove. It seems clear that these ads are working for you. KR: Connie, the President condemned all 527 ads just yesterday. Ads placed by partisan groups on both sides. He thinks these ads muddy the waters of the upfront, honest, fair and balanced campaign we want to run. CC: You want to run a clean campaign? KR: Of course this great country is a great country. And we want to deliver a fair and great campaign. If the other side insists on running ads that lie about the President’s record we have no choice but to respond to those claims. Of course we do it in our own campaigning not threw these independent ads that I and the President say should be taken off the air. CC: Mister Rove, the ads in question were financed by a Republican billionaire. KR: Exactly. CC: Alright, let me try another question. Do you condemn these Swift Boat ads? KR: I stand behind my President, Connie. President Bush says all these 527’s should be taken off the air and I agree with him. CC: So you don’t condemn these misrepresentative ads. specifically? KR: Are you asking do I want to censor an American who exercises his right of free speech? You as a journalist, should know, that’s un-American, and I’m shocked you would even think of such a thing. CC: You make my head hurt. KR: Thank you, it was an honor to be here. CC: Uhh, good night. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
