Overused phrases like “TV Icon” and “legend” are the only words that seem appropriate at his passing. A brilliant monologist and a cagey interviewer, I think Johnny Carson will be remembered as a host who could be intimate, even serious, but who never passed by an opportunity to go for a big sight gag or joke. And he never missed a beat. A few of the people Carson nurtured or discovered include Don Rickles, Joan Rivers, Bette Midler, and a self described “geek of a kid” David Letterman. Johnny Carson was an American Institution who we could count on at the end of a hard day, or through hard times, to help put it all in perspective and bring a smile to our collective faces before we went to bed. Everbody who worked with Carson on "The NBC Tonight Show" used the same word to describe him: "Nice". Johnny Carson’s legacy was laughter.
