Now, from our New York STNews World Headquarters in New Jersey is chief meterologist and your host, Connie Chung. CC: Good morning. Yesterday at five twenty five p.m. pacific standard time a 2.6 earthquake rattled the pacific northwest United States. Moments later Mt. Saint Helens exploded. On the scene is ST’s own Jim Farris for an update. Jim... JF: Thank you Connie and good morning everyone. According to the U.S. Geological Service it was a small event but for the thousands who saw the 40,000 foot cloud of dust and ash it was a big event. This was the largest explosion at the volcano since the 1980 eruption that killed fifty six people. But the cloud was picked up by the jet stream and moved out of sight quickly. CC: Was this the big one Jim? JF: Ha ha. No Connie. The geologists we’ve talked to said this could be the beginning of a series of massive explosions but not a major eruption. They really don’t know because their sensor equipment, six sensors, were all knocked out by something, but they don’t know what. CC: Dinosaurs Jim? JF: No. Connie. Not dinosaurs. It’s a volcano. The USGS will be taking a look tomorrow and plan a briefing for around 10 AM. We will know more then. For now the entire area is closed to all traffic and in a lock down for an undetermined amount of time. But that didn’t stop some people from driving up here for no reason. Girl: Yeah, it looked really big on TV so we got in the car and came up here and now they won’t let us in. Guy darn…. Man: It’s mother nature and everything. I mean we just got in the car. Other Girl: Like I’ve never seen anything, like you know this, before. I mean other than on National Geography shows or something…. JF: Moths to the flame. Connie. CC: So you’ll have another report later today Jim? JF: Yes weather permitting if they report anything or if another eruption erupts we will be here. CC: Or if dinosaurs start coming down the mountain. JF:… CC: Stay with ST for the latest on the giant volcano explosions and dinosaurs. I’m Connie Chung. See you later. ST NEWS IS THERE!!!!
