A Bit of Randomness

Most people go through life dreading they'll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They've already passed their test in life. They're aristocrats. --Diane Arbus

Excursion to the Art Museum

I got to go to the art museum today for the first time in a loooooong time. And I had forgotten how much I enjoy it there. What I'd like to rant about, however, is an exhibit there entitled Needful Things which I found to be a bit on the ridiculous side.

I'm not a stupid person. I enjoy art - many different varieties and forms. I enjoy modern and performance art as well. However, I just don't appreciate when someone takes a used inhaler (found on the ground after being modified into a pipe, used and discarded), makes a plastic mold of it and display it as art. Same goes for gluing individual pieces of cereal to a large posterboard and framing it. Or engraving a set of wine glasses and setting them on a shelf (damn...maybe I can now put Artist down on my resume from my last job).

I just don't get it.

I understand that the exhibit "...(Taps) into some of the intellectually acknowledged, if psychologically suppressed, pleasures surrounding one's relationship to art: the desire to possess, fetishize and own it." I understand the desire to comment on life and it's entrapments. But in this instance, the message was got lost in the translation.
