Old Leap Year Customs

Even an extra day this month hasn't been enough to rouse me from my blogging doldrums. Maybe I should plan on letting the blog hibernate every winter. However, Mary has an essay especially for this day over at Ivy Truit's Manic Readers blog.

In Gloves and Garlands Mary writes:

It's February 29th and ladies with beaus reluctant to commit to marriage may well be interested in reviving an old British custom whereby they were permitted to propose to their beloveds on Leap Year Day without society frowning on their forward behaviour, the hussies.
You'll need to read the essay to find out where the gloves and garlands come in!
