Rambler reposted on his journal a nice review of Nine for the Devil that he had done for Goodreads. We always appreciate good reviews and particularly ones on Goodreads whose readers have not been especially good to us.

Rambler wonders whether Nine for the Devil is the last in the John the Lord Chamberlain series, noting that it seems like it is.

Well, it is and it isn't. The manuscript of Ten For Dying is at Poisoned Pen Press right now and the book is scheduled for publication, all going well, next spring. However, Ten for Dying is something of a departure.

We felt it was time to make major changes and the first was to jump forward, in the ninth book, to the death of Empress Theodora, eliminating John's long-time nemesis.

We also decided to bring to the forefront other series regulars. Ten for Dying features the misadventures of Excubitor Captain Felix, forced in John's absence, to deal with what appears to be the theft of a sacred relic by demons.

John and family do appear, headed for exile in Greece, and confronting their own problems, but the focus is on Felix.

Whether and for how long we extend the series in its new format will likely be determined by how the tenth book is received. The eleventh book would continue the story in the tenth, reuniting John and Felix to investigate a mystery in the ruins of war ravaged Italy.
