alcohol for thought

Mood:

You know, several of us have discussed that if we totally quit drinking alcohol of any type, we'd probably cut out a lot of calories--but we never knew the numbers. So I did a little research...

Here are the calorie counts I found for 12 ounces of several of our beery favorites. Keep in mind that since many of these companies don't put nutritional information on their labels, information is sometimes contradictory, so these can only be seen as approximations:

  • Budweiser: 135 to 144
  • Bud Light: 108
  • Rolling Rock Extra Pale Premium Beer: 140
  • Killians Irish Red: 165
  • Miller High Life: 146
  • Miller Genuine Draft: 146
  • Miller Light: 96 to 98
  • Michelob Light: 130
  • Bass: 140 to 150
  • Harp: 135
  • Sam Adams Boston Lager: 160
  • Yuengling: 130
  • Guinness Extra Stout: 135 (Several sites said less, as low as 110, but that didn't seem to be reliable. One site, which said it was quoting from the Guinness site, said "Per pint, Draught Guinness has 210 calories [...] Draught Guinness actually has fewer calories than most other premium beers and lagers." I think they may have been referencing the Imperial pint (20 oz.) which makes the 135 per 12 oz. look likely. The math makes it round to about 130.)

And that's the excitement for the day. Oh, and the caloric content is directly related to the alcohol content, most liquors (whiskey, gin, rum) run about 65-75 calories per ounce. So you get that mixed drink with an ounce and a half of spirit and 3 to 4 oz of mixer (tonic or coke) and you wind up with anywhere from 150 to 200 calories. Woo hoo, huh? (Or, yay shots.) Liqueurs are even higher, due to their sugar content.

Entertain you kids more later!
