the past couple weeks... and then two nights ago I belatedly read Tim's entry which led me to Barth's entry which sent me to the store for tomatoes. Oh yeah, late night chili cookin'.
I took Barth's advice and bought the Muir Glen organic tomatoes, though of course I keep thinking of them as Muir Island tomatoes. (sigh) The Italian Herbed ones smelled good enough to eat right out of the can. Some Guinness, Melinda's Mango Habanero Sauce, lime juice (Melinda + lime actually taken from Michelle's Mexican cooking tricks), with some not-so-unusual chili ingredients and 5 hours on the stove later I had some very yummy chili. Next time I'm making a mega-pot; I thought I'd made enough to share with friends, but Sean and I will probably finish it tonight. I've eaten chili for nearly two days, and it's been good. (I need to make a batch with ground turkey so Michelle can have some). I also made some of the worst cornbread I've ever had. Never follow the recipe on the corn meal canister, they tell you to add about half the sugar you need to. Sean wound up making us some yummy cornbread to go with the chili (involving a half can of pumpkin, of all things: it didn't add any flavor but it made it a little more moist, quite good)--I threw my batch away. In other non-news, I've slept a lot, and not especially well, the last two days; I might be fighting off a cold. I think it got down to freezing last night. (Ughhhh.) Tomorrow I'll go buy some propane for the little black cat heater (thanks Mom!) to try to keep the electric bill reasonable.
