gabriel Love and ferrets and pretending to be a writer. 2003-05-29 6:32 PM Karen's last day Previous Entry :: Next Entry Mood: Sad Read/Post Comments (2) |
Reading: Alien Pets, short story collection edited by Denise Little Weather: partly cloudy and warm (82) The ferret is: checking out the dishwasher Karen worked for the same company I work for seven years. Today she lost her job. Yes, she messed up in a few ways, and yes, she was warned and failed to correct her misbehaviors, so the firing will stick. But it's still sad. She probably won't get another job, and she isn't quite old enough to draw her retirement, not that she has a lot anyway. I'll miss having Karen to work with. She has a great sense of humor, and she appreciates mine, too. She listens. She pitches in whenever there's extra work to be done. You can't rush her, but she does her part, and does it well. Okay, so she takes too many breaks, this she admits. And maybe she displays a bit of a negative attitude at times, and she makes some mistakes. But everyone does those last two things from time to time. Doing it in front of the boss is probably not the best idea. Probably she realizes that now. The company I work for, and that Karen worked for until about noon today, hires disabled people to do government contract work. They are not an ideal company to work for in a number of ways, but they do hire disabled people, and that is their attraction for us. I wouldn't have been able to get a job that pays as well as this one on the open job market as my illness contributed to making my work history pretty spotty. Now I'm medically stable, and I can work full-time, and for a good long while, most likely until a normal retirement age. But Karen's close to retirement age now, and since the company that just canned her is the only one like it in our area she probably won't find another job. I don't know what she's going to do. |
