2008-10-26 8:29 PM Where Oh Where Did Gnomely Go? Previous Entry :: Next Entry Mood: Tired Read/Post Comments (1) My trip to the Redwood Coast, Northern California
Eureka, Humboldt County: Seacoast town with many beautiful and interesting houses from the late 1800's and early 1900's. The best known and most photographed is the Carson Mansion, now home to the private Ingomar Club. They wouldn't let me in....
Eureka, Humboldt County: Right across the street from the Carson Mansion is the Pink Lady, built by redwood lumber baron Carson (who made his megabucks cutting down redwood trees, chopping them into lumber and shipping them south to that beautiful city of San Francisco) for one of his kids. Life was tough....
Ferndale, Humboldt County: A little ways south of Eureka is the Victorian village of Ferndale (location for Jim Carrey's "The Majestic" movie). The heart of beautiful dairy farming land, Ferndale is also home to some great art and ironworks galleries.... as well as where The Great Kinetic Sculpture Race first took place on U.S. soil, water, sand and air. I felt right at home among the progeny of those EuroFamers who first settled here....
The Lost Coast, Humboldt County: Heading up and over the twisting mountain road south of Ferndale I came out to the Pacific Ocean at what is known as The Lost Coast.... wilderness!! I didn't try any surfing here....
The Lost Coast, Humboldt County: To the south, behind me, is the most westerly point of land on this part of the USA.... from there it's only water and more water until you land at Hawaii-- or Japan!
Heart of the Redwoods, Humboldt County: Leaving the coast, I made my way through the outback map-spots of Petrolia and Honeydew in the Mattole River Valley.... didn't stop to buy any samples of The Crop for which this part of Northern California is sooooooo well known, though....
Trees of Mystery, Highway 101: Heading back north from the Eureka area I decided that since Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox have been standing alongside the road here for what seems like hundreds of years I might as well stand and look at whatever it was they are always looking at.... besides my blue coat fit right in, don't you think?
