Recently, I've been pretty seriously concentrated on politics. Some you, dear readers, may think this is pretty much par for the course, but few of you are in the neighborhood to see me getting pretty tightly wound. Happily, I'm going to try letting go; I'm told it's underrated. Fact of the matter is, I'm not going to change the world, not the whole world or even the country or even much of it. Rearranging the face of the world is simply outside my purview. The polis isn't mine to control or persuade single-handedly, and I just have to live with that. Being a person, however, is the entirety of my vocation. I can and must do whatever pertains to it; the balance of necessity and possibility that I discover in my life has to be dealt with. So, I renounce. For now, I turn again to what's my own. If the Angel of History's face is turned toward the past, the Angel of Politics' face gazes unblinkingly on the moment. But my future is my own, Deo volente. For the moment, I look to my own: home, friends, family, allies. If we can stand on our own, we might be able to support others. Which is the germ of a politics in itself, in fact. Take ye heed, lest ye fall also. |
