2012-12-07 9:05 PM Copyright Story The other day the person to deliver this year's Christmas floral from my housekeeper, Joan, was my former UPS driver. It was one of those moments of recognition without an anchor. He must have heard the gears in my head spinning because he kindly clarified the confusion that was clearly running rampant all over my face. I would never be one to leave a poker table a winner. Anyway, this very nice man is married to Bonnie's daughter. Bonnie has owned and successfully run the Monteagle Florist since forever. When he retired from UPS (*rolling eyes* he looks like he's 25) he started helping out at the shop.
While I was heaping praise on the delivered arrangement, he recalled a UPS delivery he'd made a few years back. Monteagle is about a 30 minute drive (give or take) to the Eastern Time Zone line. It sucks, and for reason and concept I've always had trouble articulating, but basically we lose an hour of sunlight every single day of the year. We are in the same time zone as folks in Hudspeth County, Texas, which is 1317.53 miles from my front door. Also, my home is plunked in the middle of beautiful tall trees - thousands of them. It doesn't matter whether they have leaves or not - the sun has to do battle any time of the year to land on the small patch cleared for my home. Truth is, I'm used to it. I know I gave up the moon and the stars when I moved here - but I've lived on both US coasts and have had the privilege of the most glorious sunrises and sunsets ever. At this juncture in life, I'm content with the quiet of my woods and the perpetual dawn-light that gently coats my days. It's soothing. Yikes! I've wandered from my story. Anyway, my Monteagle Florist delivery person related a story from his UPS days. It was a winter evening close to Christmas and he was delivering packages to my home. It was probably early evening, but pitch black dark so he had to use a flashlight to navigate my property. As he approached my house and started to climb the stoop to the porch, this is what his flashlight caught: It scared him silly. And perhaps the truth lies there somewhere - that Copyright probably hastened his retirement. Read/Post Comments (5) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
