Creepy Words. Beautiful Words. Sounds.

My dear friend, Bex, has triggered the *inspiration* for this tiny post.

I recently used the word jowls and she remarked how unpleasant this word is. She's right.

When jowls is used in a sentence, it's never flattering.

That got me thinking about other creepy words like:

Swarthy: Ewwwwww. The word swarthy conjures for me a big old lumpy greasy hairy man with rank breath. Ewwwww.

Pus: Ewwwwww. I don't think I need to elaborate here. Ewwwwww.

I just started noodling around with this. Any ideas? Additions?

I'm amedning this post because my cousin in Kansas left this comment on my Facebook page:

I remember hearing, long ago, that the most beautiful phrase in the English language was 'cellar door' based solely on phonetics.

This was my response:
Betty Ann! How cool is that! Akin to the cellar door in an audio context, I love the sound of a screen door slamming shut on a impossibly hot summer's day. True story: I've been known to go to my porch and intentionally open the door and let it slide from my fingers just so I can hear the wobbly slam. For me, this sound evokes something pure and simple and childlike. I'm going to amend my post to ask people to add beautiful sounding words. Thanks! I likey.
