Conditions

These aren't original thoughts. I've just rearranged the words to a timeless message.

To put conditions on a friend's happiness isn't very friendly. To put conditions on another's happiness creates a grave mistrust.

My tiara slips a lot, but each day I strive to be happy for myself, but more importantly, I strive to embrace the happiness of others. Trust me, I don't *get* a lot of other people's happiness, but it's easy to be happy with and for them because that's what true friends do.

I write a lot about the goodness in my life because most often my days are better than good. I'm no goody-two-shoes. Heck, I'm not even a goody-one-shoe. I have my slumpy, philosophical days... but oddly, and I say odd because I think I'm unusual in a way - I never ask, "Why me?"

A few weeks back I had the most beautiful conversation ever, ever with my father. He's a man of few words with thoughts that run deep, but reined in. We are so much alike except I'm a yakker.

On that particular day, he talked about some of his life experiences that shaped the person he is. I won't reveal those private thoughts he shared with me, but my love for him spilled all over the place and made a damn beautiful mess of gratitude that I've yet to clean up.

He closed his thoughts with the ultimate compliment. "We're alike, Irene. We take life head on and just do what needs to get done."

He's had a hard life. Much harder than people realize. And you will never ever hear one peep of complaint. He's taken life head on - and with such amazing grace.

An interesting side dish to my illness is that I'm not as willing to let crap slide by. I'm not interested in parasitical relationships. And I'm especially not interested in people who put conditions on my happiness. I don't trust people like that. People just need to be happy for each other without feeling they're compromising their own happiness or tenets.

As the remarkable artist Leonard Clark Knight said, "Let's all just love each other - keep it simple."

I like that a lot. Just keep it simple, folks, and love and be happy... without conditions.
