Surrogate mother gives birth to her own grandchildren

A WOMAN has given birth to her own grandchildren after acting as a surrogate mother for her daughter who could not become pregnant.

The 43-year-old woman gave birth to healthy twins, a boy and a girl, by Caesarean section in India a few days ago.

Her daughter (26), and son-in-law, who live in Ilford, Essex, were said to be "very happy" with the new additions to their family and are expected to return to England in the next few weeks.

The procedure was carried out after the younger woman, who has not been named, was told by doctors she had Rokitansky syndrome, which meant her uterus would not develop normally in pregnancy and she would be unable to give birth.

The couple were able to have IVF treatment to produce the embryos but searched for four years to find a surrogate mother. They approached Nayana Patel, a fertility expert, who suggested the woman could ask her own mother.

Dr Patel said: "It suddenly struck me, why couldn't a member from the same family become a surrogate mother?

"When I first spoke to the young woman's mother, her reaction was one of horror.

"She asked: 'What will people say? How can I deliver my own son-in-law's baby?' She was very apprehensive about other people's reactions. But I prevailed on her. In the end, she agreed because she wanted to make her daughter happy. Now she is very happy with what she has done."
