Writing News

I haven't written in a few days because, frankly, there hasn't been much to say. "Book Storey" is off to Karen Joy Fowler for the MOTA III anthology. And I'm in the middle of revisions for "One Big Crunch" to send to Tim Mullins at The Dream Engine. "One Less" is still out at Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet, and "The Old Switcheroo" is out at ICFA, and looks like it's been accepted by Darrell Schweitzer for The Neil Gaiman Reader. That's about all for writing news.

Big writing news for Janet: Ellen Datlow really liked her Clarion-written story "Nine Daughters" (which is my favorite), and though she said it wasn't entirely appropriate for SciFiction, she'd like to use it for a new anthology she and Terri Windling are editing that will contain stories based on Eastern Fairy Tales. And though "Nine Daughters" isn't based on any known fairy or folk tale, it feels like it should be, and it's so exquisitely written that I think she'll have to take it anyway. This is the first story that Janet's ever sent out to a publisher, and to get a response so overwhelmingly positive is phenomenal. I'd like to say I played a part in the success of the story (luck, inspiration, or canny advice), but I can make no claim. It was all Janet. And I'm so proud.

A few plugs:

1) Subterranean Press is giving away twenty copies of Charles de Lint's new collection, Waifs and Strays. All you have to do is sign up on their email list, and you're entered in the contest. It's that easy. Then, poke around the site; Subterranean puts out the most beautiful, well-put-together small press books that I have seen, and they've got some that you simply can't find anywhere else.

2) DreamHaven Books has posted a rare Neil Gaiman short story, "Cinnamon", in their Neil Gaiman Store, illustrated by Jill Karla Schwarz. The story was originally published in a fanzine, and is now only available at the DreamHaven site.
