I had a nice evening last night when I had my parents over to dinner. They occasionally will send me non-subliminal hints about coming to my place, so, since my apartment has been nice and clean for the last two weeks, I figured now was as good a time as any. I cooked vegetarian lasagne, which was excellent excellent excellent, and they brought salad and apple pie for desert. Probably the best meal I've had in a good while.
Then we moved to the living room to relax and let the food digest, and my mother wanted to see the special features on the My Big Fat Greek Wedding DVD which she gave me as a Valentine's present. (This is a tradition every year that I love; I always get a little something from Mom (who is a full Greek) on V-Day, even if it's just a small box of candy hearts. This year she got the above movie for a bunch of my relatives, be they Greek or not.) Unfortunately, because both pan-and-scan and widescreen versions are on the same disc, there's not much room for extras. But there is an audio commentary by Nia Vardalos, Stephen Corbett, and Joel Zwick, and we ended up watching the entire movie with the commentary on. And speaking of, a television series has been spun off from the movie, picking up when the couple comes home from the honeymoon, and called "My Big Fat Greek Life". The first episode comes on this Monday at 9:30 on CBS after the incredibly awful Everybody Loves Raymond. Most of the cast from the movie has returned, though there are a few changes, as reported by CNN. You should all watch. Some famous Greeks: Jennifer Aniston (Friends), Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live), Gia Carides (Austin Powers 2), Melina Kanakaredes (Providence). Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. If my mother is lurking, maybe she can provide a few more names.
So support the Greeks! Buy the movie! Watch the TV show! Eat some pastitsio, some spanakopita, some baklava!
Opa!
