As has been reported elsewhere, Hurricane Charlie pretty much fizzled out when it got to the Raleigh area, for which I am thankful. I feel really bad for the poor folks in Florida who got caught in the brunt of the storm.
The weekend was fairly lazy. Much watching of the Olympics. Swimming, gymnastics, synchronized diving, beach and indoor volleyball, rowing: good stuff. Put a crapload of stuff up for sale on Amazon; go buy! And instead of agonizing over revisions for "Last Fare," I started a new story! I'm about 3800 words into it at the moment, and it'll probably be around 5500 when I get through with it. It's nice knowing how long the story will end up being, that I sort of planned it this way from the start, instead of just noodling around until I'm done with it. It's literary fiction about six characters having dinner together, with each section in a different person's first-person viewpoint. They are characters I'll be writing about again in a novel I have planned (two of them in particular), and it's fun getting to see them in this setting first. This structure is inspired by The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami, The Watermelon King by Daniel Wallace, and the film Wishful Thinking which came on TV Saturday. Classes start again on Wednesday, and my last two textbooks arrived in the mail today from B&N. My foreign language proficiency exam is on Friday, and I've been studying hard for it; I got a practice exam from the guy giving it, and did fairly well on it. The job interview at QRB went well, and I should be hearing about it by this weekend. Ian Irvine has excellent advice up at his Truth About Publishing page. He goes through the complete process, from novice writer trying to sell his first piece of fiction to bitter disgruntled midlist author who wants to change publishers. People in all phases of their writing careers should read this piece.
