Marketing double-speak makes me nuts.
The fact that the modern political machines have not just taken it, but mastered it in a way that the most seasoned Madison Avenue exec would die for, makes me nuts, and sad. A great example of how to use language to sell your position is Communicating the Principles of Prevention and Protection in the War on Terror. Here's a good memo on words to use, for you and against your opponent, regardless of the actual issue, because heck, that couldn't matter, right? And all of this reminds me of a few code phrases I hate that I've heard all within the last week: Climate change= Global warming made to not sound as dangerous, because then you might want to do something about it. Activist judges= Judges we want to get rid of, because they make desicions we don't like. Obstructionist polititians= See "activist judges" and replace judge with politician. Streamlining= Removing protections on, as in "We're streamlining the process of forest regulations." Junk Science= Science politicians disagree with. For our children= Tag added to anything we want to emotionally sell, especially if logically unsound, or if we're selling to women. Common sense= Pro our side. Makes for a long week of disinformation. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
