From CNN:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Women in the military would be barred from serving in direct ground combat roles, under a House bill that sets Defense Department policy and spending plans for the upcoming budget year ... "Many Americans feel that women in combat or combat support positions is not a bridge we want to cross at this point," said Rep. John McHugh, R-New York, who sponsored the amendment. It also allows the Pentagon to further exclude women from units in other instances, while requiring defense officials to notify Congress when opening up positions to women. The amendment replaced narrower language in the bill that applied only to the Army and banned women from some combat support positions. So, old white guy wants to protect our women, who volunteered to protect our country, but making sure there's even more of a double standard in the military than there already is. Even the Pentagon is against this, as the Army's missing recruiting goals, and worried about not having enough people to fill all the positions that need them. I think it's shameful. As I heard on the NPR report covering this, House members in opposition were saying there is no "front line", and troops can be killed everywhere. Obviously we've seen that. So some hare-brained idea of hiding women in the back somewhere safe, is another outmoded obsolete idea, forwarded by people out of touch with the realities of present-day warfare. To me, it sort of is a slap in the face to those women who've volunteered. I can only hope it dies a quick death in the house. Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
