2005-05-23 10:14 PM Grim Grinning Ghost Passes On Mood: memorializing Read/Post Comments (0) |
Thurl Ravenscroft, passed away today.
Most people will know him as the voice of Tony the Tiger, but I'll remember him from the various narrations and characters he performed for Disney and Disneyland and his singing for a Dr. Seuss classic. It's no surprise he had a career in showbusiness, which a bass voice that was so distinctive, even as a child I could recognize it before I even knew his name. The quartet of "Grim Grinning Ghosts" at the Haunted Mansion would never have stuck in my head as vividly as it does without his booming deep voice. He also did a lot of other work at the parks, including another favorite of mine, Tangaroa, one of the Gods featured in the pre-show to The Enchanted Tiki Room. And what would How The Grinch Stole Christmas have been without his voice singing, "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch"? I'll miss his voice in new work, and even though I didn't know him, I'll think kindly of him. He was 91, and I hope he had a good life.
